Blackbox for Windows review at Shell Shocked 2004-04-20 03:30:24
Interesting review of Blackbox for Windows 0.0.82 over at Shell Shocked. It covers both the good and maybe not so good aspects (in the opinion of the reviewer) of the shell.

cthu1hu Great article. Most of the negatives are more about the default BB4Win install than anything though, and can be easily remedied with a few plugins or a different style. Having Explorer on the menu looks like a joke? Why have anything *other* than Windows' default file manager to start off with? Having a menu populated with software you don't have would be a joke. That's my biggest gripe about some other shells. The Windows native elements of the interface might feel a little "tacked on", but only if you're using a dark theme and/or haven't adjusted their hue and saturation.. And also, Blackbox is well documented, is for control freaks, and is bright...
qwilk Hmm, well, if that other shell you're referring to is xoblite, then let me explain why the default menu.rc is so crowded: For a newbie, it may take a while before he/she has acquired the knowledge to edit their menu.rc, and having a lot of "common" entries in the default menu.rc makes it easier for them to get started. The power user, on the other hand, could easily open up the menu.rc and get rid of all the items they do not want. So it's a matter of accessibility - do we really want to alienate or make things harder for new users of our wonderful shells?
qwilk (haven't read the article yet btw)
NC-17 cthu1hu, one of the points was that it was hard to find or reach the information, though it may be documented somewhere, which is also kinda true i suppose. gotta remember it's hard for us to see it any other way than easy or objectively because we are so seasoned and used to it.
cthu1hu qwilk: I meant shells other than blackbox, where, a lot of the time, the app links are hard coded into the menus and plugins.. In some cases, you need photoshop to make new graphics. No, xoblite's setup rocks. Don't think that's under dispute :P
qwilk Hmm, I just noticed there are two *box-related articles in shellshocked #8, the other one at link
Inauro The second article, which qwilk has linked, (link) has a lot more detail about the *box shells but focuses rather heavily on bbLean. Not that that's a bad thing, as the author makes it clear that bbLean is his code branch of preference, just something to consider when reading it.
